Director of Engineering

Position Overview

Join our team as Director of Engineering and lead the technical day-to-day operations of our development team. You will be responsible for building, mentoring, and managing a high-performing engineering team while ensuring projects are delivered on time and to specification. This role combines strategic technical leadership with hands-on people management, including hiring, performance development, and team culture building. As a key member of our team, you will define engineering processes, drive continuous improvement, and align technical initiatives with business objectives.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership & People Management

• Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing engineering team, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous learning
• Own the full hiring lifecycle: define role requirements, source candidates, conduct interviews, and make hiring decisions
• Conduct regular one-on-ones, performance reviews, and career development conversations with team members
• Create and maintain individual development plans to support professional growth and skill advancement
• Address performance issues proactively and constructively, ensuring team members receive timely feedback

Project & Delivery Management

• Define project scope, milestones, and deliverables in collaboration with product and business stakeholders
• Establish and maintain realistic project schedules, ensuring the team stays on track to meet commitments
• Implement and refine engineering processes (Agile, Scrum, Kanban) to optimize team velocity and delivery predictability
• Remove blockers and impediments to keep projects moving forward efficiently
• Balance technical debt reduction with feature delivery to maintain long-term code health
• Provide regular status updates to executive leadership and stakeholders on project progress and risks

Technical Leadership

• Work with our CTO to set technical direction and architectural standards for the engineering team
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions
• Oversee code quality, code reviews, and engineering best practices
• Drive adoption of modern development tools, including AI coding assistants and LLM integrations
• Ensure system reliability, scalability, and security across all engineering initiatives
• Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies, evaluating their potential impact on our platform

Operational Excellence

• Manage engineering budget, resource allocation, and capacity planning
• Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for team productivity and quality
• Define and enforce engineering standards, documentation practices, and operational procedures
• Partner with IT and DevOps to ensure robust infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment processes

Required Qualifications

Education

• BS/BA degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field (or equivalent experience)

Experience

• 10+ years of software engineering experience with progressive responsibility
• 5+ years of direct people management experience, including hiring, performance management, and team development
• Proven track record of building and scaling engineering teams
• Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies and project management tools
• Strong background in backend technologies (Go, Python, or similar) and database systems (Postgres or equivalent)
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Experience using and implementing AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude) to accelerate team productivity
• Familiarity with integrating LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) into production applications

• Must be able to pass a background check

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in healthcare technology or health-tech startups
• Familiarity with healthcare compliance requirements (HIPAA, SOC 2)
• MBA or advanced degree in a technical or business discipline
• Experience building products for consumer healthcare or caregiver populations
